FOR MONTHLY SALES TAX RETURN‑ CUM-PAYMENT CHALLAN By Mr. Akhtar Javed, Advocate, Lahore Under section 26 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, every registered person is required to furnish not later than due date a true and correct return in the prescribed form to a designated bank specified by Central Board of Revenue, indicating the purchases and supplies made during the tax period, the tax due and paid and such other information, as may be prescribed. 2. In exercise of powers conferred under section 50 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, read with section 26 thereof, Central Board of Revenue has framed "Filing of Monthly Return Rules, 1996" through S.R.O. 551(I)/96, dated 1-7-1996. The word "return" has been defined in rule 2(iv) of the said Rules and means the sales tax return-cum -payment challan in the form as of Annexure-A to the said rules. Rule 4(1) further provides that every registered person shall file the return in triplicate in accordance with the instructions printed on its reverse in the bank located in the jurisdiction of the Collectorate where he is registered. 3. The Annexure-A was previously substituted by Notification S.R.O. 814(I)/98, dated 20-7-1998, S.R.O. 833(I)/99, dated 29-7-1999 and S.R.O. 516(I)/2001, dated 14-7-2001. The Annexure-A has once again been substituted by Central Board of Revenue by making an amendment in S.R.O. 551(I)/96, dated 1-7-1996 and vide its Notification S.R.O. 1090(I)/2003, dated 6-12-2003, Central Board of Revenue has prescribed the new form of Sales Tax Return-Cum-Payment Challan. 4. Since the aforesaid amendment has been made on 6-12-2003 and will have prospective effect, the registered persons who will file return on or after 6-12-2003 will be obliged to file the monthly sales tax return for November, 2003 in the new format as the old Annexure-A has been substituted through a new one and presently the old form has no legal sanctity. C.B.R. has also issued a Press release on the issue informing the registered persons to file the monthly returns in the new form. 5. The copy of the new form of Sales Tax Return-Cum-Payment Challan is also being enclosed for your record.
