BOOK REVIEW BOOK REVIEW (Yes, I am a dissenter!) By Justice (R) Dr. Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani Sindh High Court A retired judge of the Sindh High Court, in his eloquently written autobiography, reflects upon his lifelong struggle as a member of a lower middle-class family and describes his pride in being born in those circumstances and in his neighbourhood, which at that time, was called Jacob Lines, and was known as one of the most impoverished areas in Karachi. Justice (R) Dr. Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, holds a Ph.D. in Law and retired as a Judge of Sindh High Court after he refused to take oath on the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO), issued by General Pervez Musharraf in 2007. Initially this book was based on transcription of a series of his interviews recorded by Mr. Tasnim Farooqui of Shah Mohiul Haq Academy for a YouTube channel. Justice (R) Dr. Sherwani, in this book, recounts the steps that he took from Jacob Lines to the High Court. He highlights the background of his parents and the immediate difficulties they faced when they migrated to Pakistan and also goes into describing his siblings and provides a succinct story of his family. The principled and upright lifestyle of his father and sacrifices of his parents played an important part in his life, and the same are recounted vividly in the book. This book will serve as an inspiration for many, as it epitomizes how hard work, discipline and adherence to principles is a true recipe for success. The book also highlights the professional achievements of Justice (R) Dr. Sherwani's long and illustrious career spanning more than thirty years, with him starting as an Advocate, and his journey from being a Civil Judge to a Justice of the High Court. As a Judge of the High Court, he never stood down from a challenge and always took principled stands. His accomplishments include implementation of a case-flow management system, e-justice projects and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) initiatives. His work has been appreciated not only by members of the Superior Judiciary, but he has also received accolades from international organizations such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Asia Foundation. In particular, his achievements in implementing information technology solutions in reducing judicial backlog have been showcased internationally. Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court, including Mr. Munir A. Malik and Mr. Rasheed A. Rizvi have already written glowing reviews of his excellent memoir.
