Assembly

1. A group of persons organized and united for some common purpose.

Assembly, right of

Riotous assembly

hist. An unlawful assembly of 12 or more persons causing a disturbance of the peace.

Unlawful assembly

a meeting of three or more persons who intend either to commit a violent crime or to carry out some act, lawful or unlawful, that will constitute a breach of the peace. Cf. Riot.

general assembly

1. The name of the legislative body in many states. 2. (cap.) The deliberative body of the United Nations.

right of assembly

The constitutional right -guaranteed by the First Amendment - of the people to gather peacefully for public expression of religion, politics, or grievances. - Also termed freedom of assembly; right to assemble. Cf. FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION; unlawful assembly under ASSEMBLY.
