Harter Act.
Maritime law. An 1893 federal statute that allocates the risks of damage to cargo at sea by relieving a carrier of liability for certain events (such as negligent navigation) provided that the carrier has exercised due diligence in sending the ship out in a seaworthy condition. 46 USCA app. ยงยง 190-196.
