Praetor
[Latin] Roman law. A magistrate responsible for identifying and framing the legal issues in a case and ordering a lay judge (judex) to hear evidence and decide the case in accordance with the statement of the issues.
Ubi lex deest, praetor supplet
Where the law is deficient, the praetor supplies the deficiency.

A praetorian action; one introduced by a praetor.

n. [Latin "praetorian law"] 1. Roman law. A law requiring that every freedman with a will must leave a patron half the property. - Also termed ius praetorium. 2. Hist. The applicable rules in a court of equity.
