Bankruptcy. A party's request that the bankruptcy court alter the automatic bankruptcy stay to allow the movant to act against the debtor or the debtor's property, as when a creditor seeks permission to foreclose on a lien because its security interest is not adequately protected. - Also termed motion for relief from stay; motion to modify the stay.

stay-put rule

School law. The principle that a child must remain in his or her current educational placement while an administrative claim under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (usu. for an alternative placement or for mainstreaming) is pending. 20 USCA ยง 14150).

touch and stay

Marine insurance. An insurer's giving to the insured the right to stop and remain at certain designated points in the course of the voyage. ( A vessel that has the power to touch and stay at a place must confine itself strictly to the terms of the permission given, and any deviation during a stay - for example, by shipping or landing goods - will discharge the underwriters, unless the vessel has permission to trade as well as to touch and stay.
