Welshing

1. The act or an instance of evading an obligation, esp. a gambling debt. 2. The common-law act of larceny in which one receives a deposit to be paid back with additional money depending on the outcome of an event (such as a horse race) but at the time of the deposit the depositee intends to cheat and defraud the depositor by absconding with the money. ( Although this term is sometimes thought to be a slur against those hailing from Wales, etymologists have not been able to establish this connection.
