anticipation
patents. the previous use, knowledge, documentation, or patenting of an invention. ( any of these will negate the invention's novelty, thereby preventing a patent or providing a defense to an infringement claim. see novelty.
tax-anticipation bill
A short-term obligation issued by the U.S. Treasury to meet the cashflow needs of the government. ( Corporations can tender these bills at par value to make quarterly tax payments. - Abbr. TAB.

A short-term obligation issued by state or local governments to finance current expenditures and that usu. matures once the local government receives individual and corporate tax payments. -Abbr. TAN.
