n. [latin] hist. eccles. law. 1. an ambassador; a messenger, such as a pope's legate. 2. one who answers for another; esp., an officer who presented church matters to the emperor and conveyed the answers to the petitioners. 3. one who, upon consultation, gives advice in ecclesiastical matters. - also termed responsalis; a responsis; secretarius; consiliarius; referendarius; a consihis.
