[Law Latin] Hist. A measure of land for assessment purposes, usu. considered about 120 acres. ( This amount was thought to be as much land as one plow with eight oxen could plow in a year. A carucate was used to assess taxes. - Also termed carucata; carve; plowland. Cf. HIDE (1); OXGANG.
