causation

1. The causing or producing of an effect <the plaintiff must prove causation>. 2. CAUSALITY.

chain of causation

1. A series of events each caused by the previous one. 2. The causal connection between a cause and its effects. Cf. CAU. SATION.

chain-of-causation rule

Workers' compensation. The principle that an employee's suicide is compensable under workers' compensation statutes if the employee suffered an earlier work-related injury that led to a mental disorder resulting in the suicide.

Securities. The defense that part of the plaintiff's damages were caused by factors other than the depreciation in value of the securities resulting from registration-statement defects. 0 If negative causation is proved, the plaintiffs damages should be reduced. 15 USCA ยง 77k(e).
