governmental trust

1. A type of charitable trust established to provide a community with facilities ordinarily supplied by the government, esp. by a municipality, and to promote purposes that are sufficiently beneficial to the community to justify permitting the property to be perpetually devoted to those purposes. ( Examples of such facilities include public buildings, bridges, streets, parks, schools, and hospitals. 2. A type of charitable trust established for general governmental or municipal purposes, such as defraying the expenses of a governmental entity or paying the public debt. Restatement (Second) of Trusts ยงยง 373, 374 (1959).
