group insurance
A form of insurance offered to a member of a group, such as the employees of a business, as long as that person remains a member of the group. ( Group insurance is typically health or life (usu. term life) insurance issued under a master policy between the insurer and the employer, who usu. pays all or part of the premium for the insured person. Other groups, such as unions and associations, often offer group insurance to their members. "'Group Insurance' refers to a method of marketing standard forms of insurance, such as life insurance, whereby a master policy is issued to the party negotiating the contract with the insurer (frequently an employer), and certificates of participation are issued to the individual insured members of the group (frequently employees)."
