infamous crime
1. At common law, a crime for which part of the punishment was infamy, so that one who committed it would be declared ineligible to serve on a jury, hold public office, or testify. 0 Examples are perjury, treason, and fraud. 2. A crime punishable by imprisonment in a penitentiary. ( The Fifth Amendment requires a grandjury indictment for the prosecution of infamous (or capital) crimes, which include all federal felony offenses. See indictable offense under OFFENSE.
noninfamous crime
A crime that does not qualify as an infamous crime. Cf. infamous crime.
