One of a system of twelve regional banks created in 1916 to provide mortgage loans to farmers. ( The system is now merged with federal intermediate credit banks to create the federal farm-credit system.

1 A bank created under the Federal Farm Loan Act to make loans at low interest rates secured by farmland. 2. A program in which land is retired from agricultural production for conservation or tree-cultivation purposes. - Also termed soil bank. See FEDERAL HOME LOAN BANK.
