nonaligned state

Int'l law. A (usu. less developed) country that has banded together with other similarly situated countries to enhance its political and economic position in the world. ( The movement of nonaligned states formally began at a summit in 1961, and during the Cold War these countries declared their independence from both the western and the Soviet blocs.
