A test for intoxication, commonly performed on persons suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, in which the suspect's eyes are observed to detect involuntary jerking movements as they follow horizontal motion. -Abbr. HGN test. See NYSTAGMUS.

nystagmus

A rapid, involuntary jerking or twitching of the eyes, sometime caused by ingesting drugs or alcohol. ( The "horizontal gaze nystagmus test" is one of the field-sobriety tests given to people suspected of being intoxicated. In the procedure, the suspect is told to focus on an object, such as a pencil. and to track its movement, usu. from side to side, by moving only the eyes. Intoxication is indicated if the eyes,jerk or twitch while tracking the object.
