restraining order
1. A court order prohibiting or restricting a person from harassing, threatening, and sometimes even contacting or approaching another specified person. 0 This type of order is issued most commonly in cases of domestic violence. - Also termed protection order; protective order. 2. temporary restraining order
A court order preserving the status quo until a litigant's application for a preliminary or permanent injunction can be heard.
