temporary restraining order
A court order preserving the status quo until a litigant's application for a preliminary or permanent injunction can be heard. ( A temporary restraining order may sometimes be granted without notifying the opposing party in advance. -Abbr. TRO. - Often shortened to restraining order. Cf.
